The Curious Case of Auguste Delagrange
Southern Louisiana, 1912. A monstrous creature stalks the highways and waterways. People go missing all the time down here. Mostly it’s put down to them wandering off the beaten track and getting lost in the swamps.
But the locals know better. They know of the vampire living in their midst. A creature so dark and evil they start to avoid leaving home after nightfall. Even then you couldn’t be sure to be safe. Bodies are discovered in their own homes. The killings increase in frequency. The creature is getting bolder and braver.
Gradually they learn the name of the monster who stalks them. Auguste Delagrange. He slaughters all he can. Sometimes with an axe, sometimes with his bare hands.
A priest and a voodoo man are dispatched to hunt him. It takes time but eventually they find his nest and drive a stake through his heart.
His mummified heart and the stake used to kill him are preserved for humanity. You can see them below.
A Thoroughly Modern Mystery
A great story but sadly it’s not true in any way. I keep seeing this story do the rounds. It continually pops up on social media.
The heart is a prop and the stake is an old world war 1 tent peg turned on a lathe to get the right shape. Created around a decade ago.
The whole thing is super well done and the attention to detail is amazing. It was made by Propnomicon. They specialise in creating (or recreating) the bizarre. Building things like this heart, vampire kits and all sorts of other oddities. Go check them out by clicking here. It’s fascinating.
I should also point out that I am in no way affiliated with them. This is not advertising, what they build is genuinely fascinating.
But not a vampire, or even old for that matter. Check the source link below to see the original listing with more pictures of the heart, stake and the box it came in.
